Woodball League starting soon 2022

National Team

The National Team is a composition of carefully selected woodball players. Uganda has featured at a series of international events since inception of the game.

In 2016 Uganda sent a team of 13 participants to the 6th Woodball world cup and the Korean Woodball Open. Overall Uganda finished fourth in the world cup after winning a bronze through Lilian Zawedde, and at the Open championship we managed to win a gold in the mixed doubles through Atamba Onesmus and Lillian Zawedde.

The earlier years we have featured at major international events and our presence at these events is never just about participation but competing for medals. We have worn Gold through Adupa Joel, and as per 2016 female rankings internationally, our own Lillian Zawedde was in position number three.

UWbF always prepares the team through a series of locally organized competitions. Our major challenge to send big teams to international events is funding. However UWbF is committed to always representing the Nation at all major international events irrespective of the team size.

Promotion & Development

UWbF is doing everything possible to promote and develop the game of Woodball in the country and Africa as a whole. In the interest of achieving our major goal we conduct a number of activities at National, regional and local levels, Below is a brief of what we are doing to let people know about and play the game:

Championships & Circuits

Lyantonde Woodball Championship

This is organized in together with Lyantonde Woodball Association, and is dominated by participants from in and around Lyantonde District.

Corporate Woodball Circuit

An annual event organized by UWbF, with now five circuits. It targets people in the corporate world, and has registered the highest attendance of eighty participants in the recently concluded circuit.

Beach Woodball Circuit

An annual competition which takes place at the sand beach in Entebbe, open to all Woodball players in Uganda. The Beach Woodball circuits are held at Entebbe, and are currently four in number.

In the corporate and beach Woodball circuits participants accumulate points and the overall winners are awarded at the end of the year.

Schools Open Championships

These championships target school going children at all levels (primary & secondary) and is conducted in Mukono, Nakawa, Entebbe, and Nakaseke.

In the interest of spreading the game farther, UWbF organizes demonstration camps, refresher courses, workshops, and seminars in different regions of the country. We have also successfully had Woodball added to the games menu for AUUS games, Eastern Africa University games, National intercollegiate tertiary institutions games, National schools & community polytechnics games, National tertiary institutions champions’ sports gala, and the national technical & vocational institute/PTC games.

Woodball Equipment Factory

UWbF with assistance from the IWbF installed machinery at Ndejje University main campus necessary for the production of woodball equipment. This factory housed by Ndejje University is a major step towards the spread of the game. As a result woodball equipment costs have gone low making it possible for institutions and individuals to purchase the equipment.

In addition to the factory UWbF opened up a showroom at the Federation offices to work as a major outlet for the equipment produced at the factory. With the equipment available cheaply more people are learning the game and playing it regularly.

Woodball in Uganda

The Woodball sport started in Uganda by Mr. Kayongo Paul Mark from Ndejje University & Ms. Peninnah Kabenge from Makerere University. In 2008, Uganda Woodball Federation (UWbF) was formed and since then, it has spread and developed the game across Uganda and Africa.

The growth of the game in Uganda is reflected by the commitment of the Executive committee, the rich annual calendar of events, the media coverage which does not only include local but also international media, and the awareness that people have about the game. In Uganda the game is spoken of as the fastest growing by major media houses, as young stars and adults love and play it.It is a game recognized by the National Council of Sports (NCS), the regulator of all national sports governing bodies under the Ministry of Education and Sports.

The Federation now boosts of being the only National Federation that makes its own equipment; thanks to the international Woodball Federation that donated to it a Woodball equipment machine that is being hosted by Ndejje University.

Team Uganda has participated in a number of international events including but not limited to the Woodball World Cup, World University Woodball championship, and Korea International Woodball Open Tournament. Visit the annual reports section for more information.

UWbF History

It was during the conference sitting of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) General Assembly in Dubai in March 2006 that Ndejje University Sports Tutor Paul Mark Kayongo and his counterpart at Makerere University, Penina Kabenge mooted the idea of introducing the woodball sport in Uganda and Africa. The idea germinated from the original founder of the sport Prof. Ming-Hui Weng who invented woodball in 1990 in Taipei City, Taiwan.

Thereafter Uganda secured equipment to kick-start the project while attending the China Woodball Open Championships in April 2006 culminating into Ndejje and Makerere Universities becoming the pioneers of the sport in Uganda and in Africa.

Kayongo went a step ahead to take the bull by the horns and with technical knowledge about the sport acquired from Dubai and Ningbo to practically introduce woodball in the country initially through a few universities.

And since then, Ndejje University has spearheaded the spread of the sport to all universities in the country, schools, corporate world and Uganda being the pioneers in Africa took on the lead to spread it to the rest on the African continent.

Noting how Uganda was fast spreading the sport like wild fire, the International Woodball Federation (IWbF) later sent a high powered delegation of two Chinese officials, Professor Huang Thinyun and federation’s General Secretary Sean Weng to officially launch the new sport in Africa and also conduct a course to introduce the sport to all participants on June 21, 2006.

Uganda later became the launching pad for Africa continent with over five countries invited to attend the inaugural IWbF woodball workshop namely Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan and Burundi among others.

The innovative Ndejje University in January 2007 went a step ahead to develop a local industry of producing affordable woodball equipment for the local consumption with locally available timber from “Omunandejje” trees. The technology made easy, low production costs and the availability of local
