Kyambogo University Hosts Uganda’s Largest Junior Woodball Gathering

The Uganda Woodball Federation (UWbF), in partnership with the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU), successfully hosted the 16th ICPAU Youth & Juniors National Woodball Championship on Saturday, 13th June 2026 at the Kyambogo University Peace Park Grounds.

The championship brought together hundreds of young woodball players, coaches, teachers, and sports administrators from across Uganda in a celebration of youth talent, discipline, and the continued growth of woodball in schools. The event attracted approximately 600 participants from over 100 teams, making it one of the largest junior woodball gatherings in the country.

For sixteen consecutive years, ICPAU has stood alongside the Uganda Woodball Federation in promoting youth development through sport. This year’s championship was supported by a sponsorship package worth UGX 21 million, reaffirming ICPAU’s long-standing commitment to nurturing young talent and creating opportunities for future generations.

A Partnership Built on Impact

Speaking during the championship, the President of the Uganda Woodball Federation, Paul Mark Kayongo, thanked ICPAU for its unwavering support and acknowledged the organization’s role in transforming the junior woodball landscape over the years.

Representing ICPAU, Ms. Lydia Tusiime delivered the sponsor’s message and reiterated the Institute’s commitment to supporting the championship and youth development initiatives through sport.

She noted that the journey between ICPAU and the Uganda Woodball Federation dates back more than a decade and that witnessing the continued growth of the sport, including the emergence of national team players from junior competitions, is a clear demonstration of the partnership’s impact.

Ms. Tusiime commended the federation leadership, sports teachers, coaches, and schools for investing time and effort into nurturing young athletes. She also encouraged participants to embrace the values learned through sport, emphasizing that discipline, accountability, integrity, teamwork, and commitment are qualities that will serve them well both in their future careers and as responsible citizens.

Her remarks reflected ICPAU’s belief that sport plays a vital role in shaping character and preparing young people for success beyond the playing field.

Growing the Future of Woodball

The ICPAU Youth & Juniors National Woodball Championship was established to create awareness of woodball among primary and secondary school learners while providing a platform for young athletes to compete and develop their skills. Over the years, the championship has become one of the federation’s most important grassroots development programs.

The 2026 edition showcased the tremendous progress that has been made in school woodball programs throughout Uganda. Schools from different regions participated in highly competitive contests, demonstrating improved technical ability, confidence, and understanding of the game.

The championship also highlighted the growing strength of school woodball, with many participants aspiring to follow in the footsteps of former junior players who have progressed to represent Uganda at regional, continental, and world championships.

Developing Champions On and Off the Field

Beyond competition, the championship serves as a platform for teaching life skills, leadership, discipline, and sportsmanship. Through regular participation in woodball activities, young athletes learn the importance of hard work, respect, teamwork, and perseverance.

The Uganda Woodball Federation believes that investing in youth development is critical to the long-term success of the sport and to the development of responsible citizens who can positively contribute to their communities.

As the championship concluded, participants, teachers, and officials celebrated another successful edition of an event that has become a cornerstone of youth sports development in Uganda.
