Woodball Awards 2022

Written by

What you need to know:

With woodball celebrating its position among the 10 priority funded sports by government, the awards gala, which had a little bit of music, plenty of food and a splash out of trophies, was the icing on the cake.

Friday night was for obvious reasons the best time for the woodball family in Uganda. Exactly 144 awards were dished out at Hotel Africana as woodball wound up the season in preparation for the busy 2023 calendar that involves the World Cup.

With woodball celebrating its position among the 10 priority funded sports by government, the awards gala, which had a little bit of music, plenty of food and a splash out of trophies, was the icing on the cake.

Woodball president Paul Mark Kayongo fervently thanked the sponsors especially government, the Chinese embassy, Ndejje University and the media, while the National Council of Sports (NCS) assistant General Secretary David Katende thanked organisers for setting the bar high.

When it came to the actual theme of the night, Joyce Nalubega and Thomas Kedi reigned supreme as University of Kisubi, the best in corporate games, lit the atmosphere.

Hail the champs

Nalubega, 30, was on top of her game both on the beach and grass. She was both the women’s winner of the beach circuit and the professional league while teaming up with Jackie Naula, she was silver medallist in the doubles.

For Kedi, a lone ranger, a win during the elite professional league and also the best singles player in the national league, although he went AWOL at the beach where Muwanguzi reigned supreme, had a season to remember at the podium.

“This is an important award for me as a person. It gives me fulfillment of my effort,” Keddi, the reigning Nile Special Uspa woodball player of 2021, said.

Stop and go

Nalubega, a left-handed player, has formed a formidable partnership with Mukoova since 2014 when she took up woodball with the duo playing together at university, clubs and the national team.

Her golden performances were complemented by Elizabeth Nambeguya and Pauline Nakayenga at Eminents.

Yet for Nalubega, it has been a stop and go journey to her second overall title.

In Primary school, she played cricket at Kasana Parents in Luweero but quickly carved in to the pressure of academics when she joined Kasana Junior in Primary Five. She would resume in secondary school to play cricket but in Senior Three she was taken to St Kizito Katikamu where sports was not a priority. She would later play netball in high school at Nakaseke International School.

At Ndejje University, she decided to play woodball after her brother Robert Matovu, an administrator at the university encouraged her to join any sport for tuition discount reasons.

“I went there for fun. I did not focus on woodball a lot. But when I lost my dad in November 2014 I realised that it was sports to make me either go up or take me down. Since then I started winning because I put in a lot of effort in training. Woodball has helped me a lot because without it I would not have completed my studies,” Nalubega said.

All to play for in juniors woodball championship

Written by

Passion. Hope. Glory. All three will come into play on Saturday at Maria Goretti Katende School in Mpigi when the ICPAU Junior Woodball Championship is held.

The junior championship, which has grown immensely over the years, is the benchmark for future players who dream to play for the national team and the stakes will be even higher this year.

Lyiora Asasira, Idris Neteese, Esther Chebet, Annet Nabwire and Martha Namulema give Mpoma School an upper hand in their title defence in the girls' category.

The squad was excellent during the Women’s Day woodball championship lifting gold in the youth category while they came out smelling the roses in the Mukono qualifiers where they dominated the podium.

Saturday will show how far they have progressed since March.

But Airforce SS Entebbe will unleash Amina Nalujja while Martha Kisakye will defend her pride at home.

Kisakye is a student of the host school and playing before her fellow students will offer a psychological boost.

The contest will be made unpredictable by Bukalabi SS, who have most of the players under Bonna Baana, a national league outfit.

20 schools each from primary and secondary levels will compete at the national event which has been held since 2010.

The boys' battle will be between defending champions Luzira and spiced by Airforce, Our Lady of Africa Namilyango and The Amazima School.

Befitting package

To enable proper preparations, the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) donated Shs15m to the organisers as an appreciation.

"We appreciate the role sports is playing in modelling responsible students. As ICPAU, we value this partnership as the tournament has been growing immensely," Julian Namale Muweesi, the Head of Stakeholder Engagement at the institute, said during a ceremony at the woodball head offices in Nakulabye.

Since 2010 when the championship started with 56 participants, the juniors have increased tremendously with a record 1,160 taking part in the 2018 edition before qualifiers were introduced. This year, 400 students will participate after regional qualifiers that were held between February and April.

Paul Mark Kayongo, the president of the Uganda Woodball Federation (UWbF) stressed the role of schools in developing the sport.

"We made a deliberate effort to grow this young sport through schools and universities. This junior’s championship is important in preparing athletes for bigger assignments in future while helping the sport grow from the grassroots," Kayongo said.

Mpoma triumph in Mukono Woodball Championship

Written by

Mpoma School claimed Mukono Schools Woodball championship on Saturday, defeating Our Lady of Africa Namilyango and St Joseph’s SS Naggalama.

The trio of Idris Neteese (45), Esther Chebet (47) and Annet Nabwire (48) gave Mpoma a clean sweep at the podium.

Mpoma was again to assert their dominance winning the doubles with Chebet and Nabwire leading the golden chase to the national games.

“We are on a mission to play at the national games. Our team is playing together and that is taking us far,” Chebet said.

Low turn-up

According to Mukono regional coordinator, Vincent Kaganda, the turn-up was lower than expected because some schools are still cautious of Covid-19 while others are undertaking examinations.

Seroma SS, Bishop’s Mukono and St Francis Borgia were absent in the regional qualifiers.

The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) Woodball Schools Championship last played in 2019, is expected in June.

At Sseke playgrounds in Lwengo District, six schools competed for the top honours with the pair of Juliet Nansamba and Zulfah Nabasumba from Kabaseegu Primary School coming on top in the girls rankings. Hafiswa Naddamba of Lwentale coming third.

The boys’ leader board had Ashiraf Muhangi, Hafizuh Mutebi and Dirisa Mwanje.
