The inclusion of juniors, youth categories, and an increased cash prize are the new additions to this year’s Woodball President’s Cup on Sunday at Lugogo Cricket Oval.
Uganda Woodball Federation (UWbF) administrator Julius Agaba confirmed these new developments, stating that the inclusion of juniors in the tournament aims to give them the opportunity to interact with senior players and learn from them.
“We have also increased the cash prize in addition to bringing on board the juniors and youth categories in the tournament,” Agaba said.
“We shall decide how much to offer the winners to share, but it will not go below the standard per category,” Agaba noted. Acting UWbF technical director William Osire announced that over 45 teams are expected for the one-day tournament, promising a tougher and more competitive event due to the entries and cash prize.
“All the top players have confirmed their participation, and those on the national team will be out to prove a point, while those who missed out will be eager to challenge, ensuring good competition,” Osire said.
The tournament will feature primary schools, secondary schools, clubs, and corporate categories.
Makerere University are the men’s defending champions, while the Ministry of Public Service (MOPS) holds the women’s title. Joyce Nalubega (MOPS) will be out to defend her title in the women’s singles category against competitors like Joan Mukoova. Akram Matovu (Makerere University) will be defending the men’s title.
“I’m back from my maternity leave, and my challengers should come ready for a fight because defending my title is my focus,” Nalubega said.
